Professor Hyeon-Seon Jeong

Professor Hyeon-Seon Jeong is an expert in children’s digital media use and learning for digital media literacy in and out-of-school settings. Specifically, Hyeon-Seon is at the forefront of understanding children’s out-of-school literacy practices and digital parenting, as well as developing curriculum and pedagogy for digital media literacy learning. Hyeon-Seon will contribute to the Educated Child programs, advancing understandings of how children in diverse communities participate in learning spaces and engage with curriculum guidelines and practices. She will also examine how new technologies support early childhood curriculum development and foster interactions in educational settings.

Hyeon-Seon is author of a best-selling book, Introduction to Digital Parenting (2017). She has also contributed to scholarly books including The International Encyclopedia of Media Literacy (Wiley, 2019), Learning Beyond the School: International Perspectives on the Schooled Society (Routldge, 2019), and New Media and Learning in the 21st Century: A Socio-Cultural Perspective (Springer, 2015). Hyeon-Seon is currently conducting research on Social Living Lab for Parents as Mediators of Children’s Media Use, funded by the National Youth Policy Institute (2021). Hyeon-Seon regularly consults to public organisations and government – she worked with the National Information Society Agency to develop guidelines on the use of smartphones for communication and the preschool curriculum. Hyeon-Seon also worked with the Korean Ministry of Education on various policy research, including Innovative classroom practices for media literacy education (2015), and Developing models of school textbook units for media literacy education (2016).

Hyeon-Seon is founder and Director of the Center for Media Literacy Research, Gyeongin National University of Education and Course Leader of the M.Ed. in Digital Media Education.
